Why I love fonts and typography

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning).

Font and typography rule our lives these days.

Whether it be on the internet, on our phone, on signage at a restaurant, or in a shopping centre, we are completely surrounded.

The typography we see everyday is there to instruct us, inform us, entertain us and communicate with us.

Certain fonts and the way they are displayed is used to create an emotional response in consumers as a pull marketing technique. The way typography is used can decided whether you make a purchase from a particular business or brand. We all remember brands for their signage or logo – and a major part of this is all in the use of the selected font.

In my work day, I notice tonnes of varieties of fonts – some that work for the business, and others that don’t.

When selecting a font for your business, brand or logo you need to make sure that it works in both print and on your website.

A thick font that looks good in print may not translate across to the web as easily. Though, don’t believe those that say that you only need one font for your entire business, as different types of fonts work best for different areas of your branding.

Here are a few tips for deciding what fonts work best for your business:

Fonts for Logosvirgin

Logo fonts can be as fancy, big and bold as you want them. When choosing a your ideal typography font, make sure the style represents your brand.

There is no point having a water colour font to if you are a corporate business as it does not portray the right mood.

Some times the simplest ideas work best. On their own or even used together…

Everyday Fonts

These fonts need to be simple and easy to read in print (brochures, letters), on your website, in emails. They are used everyday and need to be legible to a wide variety of people.

Steer clear of fancy, script or bold typeface fonts.
